Blue Sky

by J.E. Sunde & MOMO.

/

about

When MOMO. and J.E. Sunde first met at a show while touring the Midwest in 2010, they certainly wouldn’t have imagined themselves writing a song together via Zoom during a global pandemic over a decade later. But as the saying goes, “in the midst of chaos lies creativity,” and out of the constraint and disruption of COVID, their collaboration, “Blue Sky,” was born. While J.E. Sunde’s voice takes the foreground on this track, the song bears the obvious fingerprints of both these prolific songwriters, whose combined output spans 9 albums over the last 15 years. With Sunde in Minnesota and MOMO. in Portugal, the two also joined forces with MOMO.’s longtime friend and collaborator, Caetano Malta, who co-produced from his home in Paris – a track that took shape in 3 different studios across 3 different countries.

“Blue Sky” displays the effortless craft of two seasoned songwriters who know how to deftly tap into universal emotions and a feeling of timelessness. The song leaves you with the vague impression that it could have been written in the early 60’s, or perhaps as recently as yesterday, but it doesn’t really matter, because you know exactly the time, the place, and the feeling it conveys. And while much of the world is imbued with a sense of optimism as we attempt to recover from more than a year of isolation and disintegration, “Blue Sky” seems an apt analogy for what it’s like to approach brighter days with an overwhelming sense of loss.

lyrics

Blue sky
At the rising of the sun
Blue sky
When the lonely night is done
Blue sky
Still my true love is gone

Sweet wine
The color of her lips
Sweet wine
The world starts swaying like her hips
Sweet wine
Still my true love is gone

All the children are laughing
Building castles of sand
It’s like a forgotten language
I just don’t understand

I’ll try
To find some comfort there
I’ll try
The smell of springtime in the air
I’ll try
Still my true love is gone

All the children are laughing
Building castles of sand
It’s like a forgotten language
I just don’t understand

Look at the stars they all shine so bright
Meteor showers thrown like glitter
Flying in the sky

I’ll try
To find some comfort there
I’ll try
The smell of springtime in the air
I’ll try
Still my true love is gone

His hushed voice and crisp, cunningly-shaped guitar lines transform his delicate melodies into a universal language, admired far beyond MOMO’s native Brazil.
